See where one of the Meji Restoration heroes, Yoshida Shoin, taught Japanese students of every social status at Shokasonjuku Academy. The tiny wooden and tiled roof school began as a single 13 sq m (139 sq ft) classroom with eight tatami floors. Eventually the students helped and added an additional room and 105 tatami floors. The celebrated teacher discussed the future of the nation here, inspiring many of his followers and students to become reformers of modern Japan. Inside, see the statue dedicated to the great mentor and photographs of the renowned reformers. Take the guesswork out of planning a Hagi vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • Yoshida Shoin led a wonderfully romantic life as a.teacher and traveler, and his students included some of modern Japan's Meiji creators, men who weren't afraid to take action during life and death times. In this sleepy little town of Hagi you can visit the homes and classrooms of all involved, including the house of Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister.
  • Historical school, birth of engineering in Japan.
