The Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate, or Hakodate Orthodox Church, is Japan’s oldest Russian-style Orthodox Church, featuring a modernized Byzantine exterior. Founded in 1859 by the Russian consulate and consecrated by the future St. Nicholas of Japan, the church stands as a testimony to Russo-Japanese political and trade ties during the 19th century. Built on Hachiman-zaka slope near Motomachi Park, the church offers a great view of Hakodate city. Locals nicknamed the church a “ding-dong temple” after the sound of its bells. You cannot enter when church services are in progress. Put Hakodate Orthodox Church and other Hakodate attractions into our Hakodate online travel planner, and watch your holiday take shape.
