The Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate, or Hakodate Orthodox Church, is Japan’s oldest Russian-style Orthodox Church, featuring a modernized Byzantine exterior. Founded in 1859 by the Russian consulate and consecrated by the future St. Nicholas of Japan, the church stands as a testimony to Russo-Japanese political and trade ties during the 19th century. Built on Hachiman-zaka slope near Motomachi Park, the church offers a great view of Hakodate city. Locals nicknamed the church a “ding-dong temple” after the sound of its bells. You cannot enter when church services are in progress. Put Hakodate Orthodox Church and other Hakodate attractions into our Hakodate online travel planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Very beautiful and unique building It is 10 minutes from the Hakodate mountain ropeway. Built in 1916, is known as a representation of western-style buildings in Hakodate It once burned down in a fire in 1907 and was rebuilt in 1916 The Hakodate Orthodox Church is one of the city's most famous historical buildings and it was the first Russian Orthodox church to be built in Japan It was the fifth bell to be chosen for the best sound in Japan. It rings about three to five times every Saturday from 5:00 pm and every Sunday's morning during the prayer
  • Didnt get a chance to go in but the architecture of the church is large and distinctive. Not far from motomachi park mt hakodate ropeway and the red brick warehouses.
