Create an itinerary including The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward
See a blend of Western and Japanese styles in the architecture of The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, an early 20th-century assembly hall. The building's design stands in testament to the growth in foreign trade enjoyed during the Meiji period, with the building--constructed in 1910, towards the close of the Meiji period--combining Japanese arabesque details with broadly European art nouveau features. Take a tour of the museum to see many artifacts related to the history of the city, while also admiring the building itself, inside and out. A visit to The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Hakodate trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • It looks so beautiful in photographs and was so disappointed to see the building under wraps and closed for construction.

  • Although it's closed for upkeep due to earthquake, this area is still very much the place to go to with its surrounding areas full of history and beautiful sites to walk around such as the old...

  • A beautiful building that is clearly well looked-after. The exhibition on the ground floor in particular was very nice and interactive. There's English information everywhere which is nice. I didn't really like that on the upper floor if you want information you have to download an app. Personally I'd rather have just had displays. So I kind of wandered through the top half a bit absentmindedly. Still, very pretty and architecturally very interesting.
  • The Color of this building is very bright because it was newly painted only a few years ago. Inside is rather gorgeous partly due to the visit of prince long time ago.
