Asahi-dake, Higashikawa-cho

The highest peak in Hokkaido, Asahi-dake rises formidably to 2,291 m (7,516 ft) above sea level. Winter on this volcanic mountain brings skiers and snowboarders, relishing the powder of its unspoiled slopes, while in summertime, hikers make the hearty ascent to the summit, complete with steaming vents and a crater. The trek from the foot of the mountain is a grueling 4.5-hour slog, worthy for experienced hikers; if you want something a little less intensive, take the healthy hike after riding the gondola up to Sugatami. From here you can either follow a 60-minute circular trail, observing ponds and sulphurous vents, or walk for roughly two hours on a well-marked path up and along the crater's edge. Have your camera ready at the summit for some dramatic views and steaming bellows. You'll need hiking boots, plenty of water and snacks, and altitude-appropriate dress.
