Known for its eleven-headed statue of a bodhisattva associated with mercy, Hase-dera Temple probably dates back to the 8th century CE. Though several documents indicate that the temple may have been established later, local lore maintains the site's earlier origins. Explore the onsite museum (for an additional cost), take in the coastal views of Kamakura, and enjoy the lush temple garden. Most importantly, be sure to view the wooden sculpture of bodhisattva Kannon, which, as legend has it, was carved from a camphor tree in 721. Very nice temple, plenty of little inlets and sub-shrines to check out, including one in a cave. If you can go during late May/early June there are lovely hydrangeas blooming everywhere.

The entrance fee is 400 yen and there is paid parking right outside the temple. It’s one of my favourite temples around Kamakura! The hydrangeas and autumn foliage here are stunning as is the view from the top of hydrangea mountain. There’s a open area with snacks and drinks, and there’s also a vegetarian cafe (indoors but with big glass windows) overlooking the ocean.

A beautiful gem tucked away off the busy street. If you’re in the area, and already getting fleeced for parking, you should absolutely visit. Keep your eyes pealed for the little cavern you can walk through and try to visit while the hydrangeas are in bloom.
