An old imperial palace-turned-park, Kyoto Gyoen National Garden makes a good place for a long walk under trees in the midst of an ancient capital city. Several shrines scattered around the park provide a surprise factor for curious walkers strolling among cherry trees, magnolias, and plum trees in this well-kept area. Children can burn off steam in a playground with swings and sandboxes, while joggers and cyclists can exercise on gravel and grassy paths. You'll find public restrooms and vending machines across the park. Arrange to visit Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and other attractions in Kyoto using our Kyoto tour planner.

  • Here in the middle of Kyoto is an urban oasis, perfect for a stroll on a winter’s day. Bikes have to be left at the perimeter.

  • Bring comfortable shoes and a hat. A huge 11 hectares in size, home to the actual Kyoto Imperial Palace, Omiya Palace, Sento Palace, and the Kyoto State Guest House is this well cared for garden...

  • The park is huge. We couldn’t enter the palace as it was holiday but we did enjoy the nature. Small pebbles paved road inside the park for walking. You can spend some time alone reading or just sitting or sit with your friends.
  • Beautiful gardens - if you want to see the best part make sure to join the guided tour through the Sento imperial palace. The guided tour lasts one hour so its not long-winded. The last tour starts at 15:30 - the Sento palace closes at 16:30.
