Create an itinerary including Zojo-ji Temple
With a towering main gate and an enormous bell, Zojo-ji Temple ranks as one of the most important places of worship for Japanese Buddhists. Enter the complex through the imposing two-level wooden gate from 1622--the only piece of the temple to survive World War II intact. Inside the complex, you'll find a gigantic bell from 1673, as well as a cedar tree planted by American president Ulysses Grant. Head behind the great hall and you'll find a cemetery and several graves marking the resting places of six different Tokugawa shoguns, rulers of the country between the 17th and mid-19th centuries. Put Zojo-ji Temple on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Tokyo sightseeing planner.
