Following a pleasant 15-minute hike through the forest along a stream, you'll stumble upon stacks of stones, which serve as wish towers made by devotees and visitors paying tribute to the sun goddess. You can’t enter the cave, but can instead admire it from an observation deck. The cave is believed to have many spiritual powers and attracts crowds of visitors year-round. It can be reached via Amano Iwato Shrine, some 10 km (6 mi) from Takachino. Not sure if the significance of the shrine and takachiho area can be understood without a guide but it's a very nice spot with lots of rock piles.

This is a really unique shrine to visit, with a very interesting and significant story behind it's creation. I would highly recommend visiting and I found this shrine much more impressive than the nearby Takachiho gorge itself! The walk down to the shrine is part of the experience too.
