Inside a merchant building from the 16th century, Latvian Museum of Photography remains Riga's only museum entirely devoted to the art of photography. You'll find the permanent exposition on the second floor, with the temporary exhibits taking the halls on the third level. The museum showcase Latvian and international photographers and hosts regular conferences, lectures, tours, and consultations. The main focus here is the development of Latvian photography between 1830s and 1940s. The building is located near two other museums (devoted to film and sports respectively), which you can also drop by after a quick lesson in Latvian photographic arts. • Really interesting little museum with history of cameras, old photographs and (our highlight) the development of the Minox 'spy' camera - so tiny and efficient!

  • Interesting journey in the Latvian history of photography. Included a modern day exhibition about water. We found it very interesting. Also intriguing photos from a fire in one of the cities church and clocktower spires in black and white. I would recommend a visit. The museum shop also have good books from a number of highly skilled Latvian photographers.
  • Tiny museum but full of interesting old cameras, lots of old photos taken in Riga, and a detailed history until the second world war. Pity that they have so little space, and only books in Latvian. Worth a visit, takes max 1 hour to see everything. Take a ticket for the whole museum, it's cheap and worth supporting.
