Wander through the maze of scented alleys lined with colorful stores at Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest markets in the Middle East. Standing on the ancient trading route to China and India, the market played an important role in the development of the city. Originally built from palm leaves and mud, today it is covered by modern timber roofing. The market got its name--which refers to the darkness--from the narrow alleyways so tightly packed with stalls that they stop the sun's rays from getting in. The selection of goods ranges from household items and clothing to hookah pipes, perfumed oils, precious stones, and framed daggers. Don't worry if you get lost--you're bound to, especially if you're a first-timer--you can always refresh yourself with fruit juice or grab a bite of shawarma, a favorite regional dish. With our online itinerary creator, Muttrah attractions like Mutrah Souq can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • It's a nice old local market, in fact oldest market of the Gulf countries. The picturesque market is with a rugged mountain in the background. Expect to get authentic frankincense, perfume oil over here. Be prepared to bargain extensively. You can have local snacks and coffee at a local shop while watching how the locals spend their time at leisure.
  • I saw considerable development in souq as I visited after a lo ng time
