Surrounded by palm trees, Nakhal Fort offers insight into the history of the region and scenic views of the plain and the town. Named after an ancient province, the site dates back to pre-Islamic times, and the 17th-century stronghold was built to protect important trading routes. The gateway and the round towers were added in the mid-19th century, and the area underwent complete renovation in 1990. See traditional furnishings and handicrafts in the rooms, as well as a collection of historical guns at the museum. The indoor seating area at the top--with oriental rugs and colorful cushions lined against the wall--offers a quiet break from the sun. You will need to climb many stairs to tour the fort. The Nakhal Fort is built on top of a mountain. Originally built by the Sassanids (currently Iran), it dates back to pre-Islamic times. Nakhal Fort, is a wonderful place to visit. This pre-Islamic fort shows Omani heritage at its finest. The fort is home to a museum. Nakhal Fort is a famous historical/cultural landmark in Oman, so if you are visiting the country, I recommend you go here.

The fort is being renovated, looks like several months of work still to go before it completes. The inside of the fort is CLOSED to the public. You can walk round the outside of the walls. Visited 29th December 2022.
