The Science Museum of the University of Coimbra (Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra) gathers the historical scientific collections of several units of the University of Coimbra, in Coimbra, Portugal. It includes the collection of scientific instruments from the 18th and 19th century of the Physics Museum, the collections of botanics, zoology, anthropology and mineralogy of the Natural History Museum, and the collections of the Astronomical Observatory and the Geophysical Institute of the University of Coimbra.

Formerly there were several museums in the university, including a museum of physics, a museum of zoology, a museum of natural history, and a museum of mineralogy and geology, which were managed by different university departments. They merged in 2006/2007 to form the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra.

Most of these collections date back to the reform of the University promoted by the Marquis of Pombal in 1772, where the teaching of the sciences took major importance, and are lodged in the contemporary buildings of the 18th century. This constitutes the most important science collection in Portugal and one of the most important ones in Europe.

  • This museum has 2 buildings, one for natural history and the other for chemistry, physics and temporary exhibitions. We enjoyed the visit and the staff was very nice.

  • Amusing and very interesting way to get to know Coimbra university history. There are several interacting experiments with light to get to know some science phenomena. Recommended for all ages. Very useful to buy the ticket online with also other attractions included
  • Came to coimbra just to see it and it was... Okay? There are much more extravagant universities across the world than this. I would rank it equal to Canadian universities in terms of looks/design/interesting Ness. The library tour was rough as they don't allow you explore, and restrict you to stay in areas for moments of time. The two areas before the library are quite empty and we found we just waited to be let into the next spot. We also weren't allowed to leave (which doesn't make much sense) until we waited 15 minutes. We were spat out and that was it! The palace was okay to see. Nice tower over the city, but they could do so much more to make it better. Make it engaging, or something different! A church is a church, a palace is a palace. The only place we thought had effort put into it for design and careful thought was the room of curiosities. It's a simple room, but with simple lighting changes, they made it seem like a room from Harry Potter. Anyway, make sure you only come to coimbra for one day MAXIMUM. You will be bored otherwise.
