A commemorative arch dedicated to recovery from the 1775 earthquake, Arco do Triunfo boasts 7 m (23 ft) statues at its top, representing glory, valor, and ingenuity. Originally a bell tower, this neoclassical structure took over a century to become what it is today. Standing over 30 m (100 ft), it welcomes you to the historical area of Lisbon. Look for statues of Vasco da Gama, Nuno Alvares Pereira, Viriato, and Marquis of Pombal at its lower level. Climb the arch's gazebo to get panoramic views of Rua Augusta. • Beautiful architecture and square, should be on the list to visit if you are in Lisbon. On a sunny day it is necessary to bring a hat or sunglasses, all the white tiles are blinding 😎

  • As is the case with its plaza neighbor (the iconic, lively Praca do Comercio), this gorgeous arch is a must-see for anyone in Lisbon—I don’t care how old, how well-traveled, or how different you are.....  more

  • We loved it here, everything looks so beautiful in the sunshine! The yellow walls surrounding the square and the River Tagus is altogether so lovely. I just had to stand and admire it so much and I was so grateful that my home hallway one side is painted a beautiful rich mustard :) it made me so happy.
  • This is such a unique place. The history can be felt in every single corner. There are no tickets to be bought. It’s an open street that ends with the Arc with a large open space. There are lots of food choices and is next to the water. It’s a must see in Lisbon.
