UNESCO-listed Andong Hahoe Folk Village showcases traditional tile-roofed and thatch-roofed Korean houses. Explore the village, found nestled in the foothills of Hwasan Mountain, to learn more about Joseon architecture and culture as you marvel at the traditional houses on display. Whilst most of the homes remain closed to the public to maintain the villagers' privacy, some do allow entry to their courtyards, where you can get a sneak peek of village life. The village has also earned reknown for its preservation of folklore traditions, valuable books, transcripts, and structure of clan-based villages living side-by-side. It became even more popular in 1999 when Queen Elizabeth of England visited the area. Make sure you try a local delicacy during your visit, such as Andong Soju, a distilled alcoholic beverage not for the faint-hearted. A world heritage village where people actually lived. Not as large as I thought this making it easy to see everything. There are English speaking tour guides available if you are lost. A nice lady...

I've been fortunate to feel like I travelled in time when visiting Hahoe. We had a local volunteer guide, a wonderful English-speaking guide that gave us great information into Korean traditions, architecture and history. I recommend asking for a guide at the information point next to the bus shuttle.

Tips if you are planning to go. 1. Book the local guide (english available) 2. Check the bus schedule! (it’s country side. Buses work limited times) 3 If you wanna experience the night, book it in advance (weekends are normally full) If you are looking for somewhere to experience real traditional part of Korea, Andong is the place. I have been to Jeonju 3 times with different guests and it felt too commercialised and set up. Also it was too overpriced everywhere in Jeonju. But in Andong, prices are reasonable! Any beverage will cost under 5000krw and I loved it. Maybe food looks expensive but if you see how much they serve you, it’s not really expensive. And it’s delicious! The most exciting part is that Hahoe village is a real place. People still live there and take care of the village as one. Thanks to them we still can experience our ancient’s life nowadays. I highly recommend this place if you are in Korea.
