In front of the 9.5 m (31.2 ft) statue of the king, who ruled from 1418-1450 CE, sit a number of inventions that came into use during his progressive and technologically-minded reign, including a celestial globe, rain gauge, and sun dial. Best known as the inventor of the Hangul alphabet, several inscribed characters mark the stone plinth on which the king, seated on a throne and smiling, sits. There is a free museum underneath the statue. As we got in and filmed the hallway right at the entrance, a staff from a few feet away screamed "no video!" at us. As this is a no-admission fee...
