CIty of Ramen

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kokuei Takino Suzuran Hillside National Park and The Hokkaido University Museum. There's lots more to do: visit Nijo Market, don't miss a visit to Sapporo Central Wholesale Market Jogai Market, get a taste of the local shopping with Tanukikoji Shopping Street, and walk around Odori Park.

Narita to Sapporo is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of train, bus, and ferry. When traveling from Narita in December, plan for much colder days and slightly colder nights in Sapporo: temperatures range from 0°C by day to -2°C at night. You will have some time to spend on the 24th (Sat) before leaving for Otaru.

Otaru — 2 nights

Town of Hills

The port city of Otaru has long attracted domestic visitors, drawn in by the city's many historic buildings, and has started to garner international attention, too.
On the 24th (Sat), trek along Maruyama Hachijuhakksho Hiking Course, contemplate the waterfront views at Otaru Canal, then take in the awesome beauty at Mt.Tengu, and finally enjoy breathtaking views from Mount Kenashi View Point. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 25th (Sun): make a trip to Shukutsu Panorama Observation Deck, hunt for treasures at Sankaku Market, make a trip to Welcome Bell, then look for gifts at Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building, then see the interesting displays at Ishihara Yujiro Memorial, and finally take a leisurely stroll along Otaru Port Marina.

Traveling by car from Sapporo to Otaru takes an hour. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In December, daily temperatures in Otaru can reach 0°C, while at night they dip to -2°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Mon) so you can drive to Toyako-cho.

Toyako-cho — 2 nights

Start off your visit on the 26th (Mon): take in the dramatic scenery at Sobetsu no Taki Waterfall, enjoy breathtaking views from Silo Viewing Platform, get a new perspective on nature at Toyako Visitor Center, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Konpira Crater Ruins Walking Trail, then contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Toya, and finally don't miss a visit to Ukimido Park. Keep things going the next day: try out the rides at Noboribetsu Date Historic Village and then admire nature's wide array of creatures at Noboribetsu Bear Park.

Asahikawa — 3 nights

Perched on the confluence of four rivers and surrounded by green hills, Asahikawa combines a modern city experience with the pristine nature nearby.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Asahiyama Zoo, Ningle Terrace and Shirahige Falls. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Susoaidaira and Aeon Mall Asahikawanishi. Get out of town with these interesting Asahikawa side-trips: Biei-cho (Shirakaba Road, Biei Shrine, &more), Morinoyu Hanakagura (in Higashikagura-cho) and Higashikawa-cho (Nakadake Onsen & Komadome Waterfall). And it doesn't end there: fly down the slopes at Santa Present Park, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Akadake Ginsendai, stroll around Kaguraoka Park, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Asahikawa Gojo Catholic Church.

Getting from Toyako-cho to Asahikawa by car takes about 4 hours. Traveling from Toyako-cho in December, things will get slightly colder in Asahikawa: highs are around -2°C and lows about -5°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 31st (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to Sapporo.
