Crete's largest city, Heraklion remains best known for its proximity to a sprawling Bronze Age archaeological site, once the center of a vanished Minoan civilization.
Visiting Reptisland and The Natural History Museum of Crete will get you outdoors. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Church of Saint Titus and Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Heraklion side-trips: Red Sand Beach (Kokkini Ammos) (in Matala), Melidoni Cave (in Melidoni) and Sfentoni Cave (in Zoniana). Next up on the itinerary: step into the grandiose world of Castello del Molo (Koules), get engrossed in the history at Museum for the Battle of Crete and National Resistance, delve into the distant past at The Palace of Knossos, and contemplate the long history of Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis.

Stockholm, Sweden to Heraklion is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of train, bus, and ferry. The time zone difference when traveling from Stockholm to Heraklion is 1 hour. Prepare for much hotter weather when traveling from Stockholm in December: high temperatures in Heraklion hover around 19°C and lows are around 12°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 1st (Sat) early enough to take a shuttle to Chania Town.

Chania Town — 4 nights

The place where Cretan and Venetian cultures merged in the 13th century, Chania Town attracts throngs of tourists with its well-preserved medieval harbor.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Greek National Football Museum and St. Nicholas Church. Visiting Agii Apostoli Beach and St. Anthony Gorge (Gorge of Patsos) will get you outdoors.
