Dili — 5 nights

When East Timor declared itself independent from Indonesia in 2002, the small town of Dili took center stage as the nation's capital.
Change things up with a short trip to Old Ai Pelo Prison in Liquica (about 48 minutes away). And it doesn't end there: examine the collection at The Archives & Museum of East Timorese Resistance, look for all kinds of wild species at Tasitolu, explore the different monuments and memorials at Cemetery of Santa Cruz, and pause for some photo ops at Cristo Rei.

To find where to stay, photos, other places to visit, and more tourist information, read our Dili itinerary planner.

Detroit, USA to Dili is an approximately 35-hour flight. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to East Timor Time (TLT), which is usually a 14 hour difference. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.

Rugged beaches lure many to take their holiday in East Timor, a former Portuguese colony that gained its independence in 2002 after a brutal occupation by Indonesia. With pristine reefs, steep mountains, mysterious jungle caves, and misty hillside villages, the country represents one of Asia's most charming destinations, where it's still possible to have an off-the-beaten-track adventure. Many choose to tour East Timor by car, stopping at various locations to snap photos, dive into the sea, and mingle with the locals at quaint settlements preserving age-old traditions lost to the rest of the world. Those preferring urban experiences concentrate on Dili, the ultra-relaxed capital with access to both sea and mountains.
