With 189 rooms, Dunrobin Castle and Gardens is the biggest estate in the north of Scotland. Long the official home of the dukes of Sutherland, this imposing castle is often described as "the jewel in the crown of the Highlands." Though the site has its origins in the Middle Ages, most of the present buildings and gardens were added in the 19th century, with elements modeled on the work of French architect Viollet-le-Duc. The French influence extends into the gardens, which were inspired by the famous gardens at Versailles. The castle houses a museum of animal trophy heads, shot by the Sutherland family on various safaris, along with an important collection of archaeological artifacts. Stop by for the falconry display, held daily in the manicured gardens. PutDunrobin Castle and Gardens into our Golspie trip tool and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • What a castle to have a spectacular sea view, formal & wild garden. So much to learn from the staff who were very willing to share their knowledge regarding historical facts. The museum was not...

  • Beautiful indeed! Incredible display of castle and Scotland history and this place also very happily situated. You can take your four legged friend to walk around but not inside the gardens, however pliantly of trails and road along the shore with wonder views on castle and gardens.
  • Honestly, this was probably the most moving museum for me personally that I have been to, as it really did not seem forced or artificial. It was a genuine look at the mementos and life collected through the years by a noble family. The grounds are beautiful and the castle quite interesting. It’s a fantastic look at true authentic history and a life lived, vs the usual artificiality I am used to in a museum. I could spend days in the garden, it is magnificent.
