Fort George, Inverness

Walk the walls of Fort George, admire the Georgian buildings and garrison chapel contained within, and browse the museums and dioramas which document its history. Completed in 1757 in response to the Jacobite rising of 1745, the vast fort remains virtually unchanged and still serves as an army garrison, though much of it is open to the public. The elongated star-shaped fort sits on a promontory, enclosing an area equivalent to five football fields. The main rampart offers commanding views of the surrounding coastline and of dolphins and other wildlife that which frequent the waters around it.
