Eilean Donan Castle
An icon of the western Highlands, Eilean Donan Castle rests on a tidal island in Loch Duich. Before walking over the footbridge to tour the castle ruins, take a stroll to the south for a stunning view of the ruins with the loch beneath and the sky in the background. The restored castle has a keep deep within its walls that is open to the public along with the rest of the grounds. In 2001, the island had a population of one; since 2011, there are no permanent residents living there, so it is exclusively a tourist site. We have always enjoyed visiting Eilean Donan castle and try to get there at coffee time as we loved the cafe. To our great disappointment this year the cafe was closed (permanently?) to be replaced..... more

Nice castle, friendly staff who are very knowledgeable. Nice walk across the water bridge, but the charge is a little steep considering it's quite small but there's good information on the history. It's £3 if you want to walk around the grounds, but you're better just paying the £10 and going inside, or just staying outside. Thought it was a little unreasonable to charge a lot for parking and then for entry also.

I'd say this is a great place for a half day excursion maybe a bit less. It's fun to walk through all the different nooks and crannies of the hospital and learn about the history. There's a little shop in there where you can get some local swag. I purchased a hat which I love.
