Create an itinerary including Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm
Commemorating a chapter from World War II, Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm preserves the legacy of Italian prisoners brought in for forced labor from the North African front. While working on the construction of a series of causeways connecting the island with the mainland, they used some of the material to make themselves a little piece of their homeland. From the side, the church looks like a tunnel, which it actually is: only its front facade resembles an Italian chapel. Its modest exterior belies the warm, ornate interior; step inside to see its frescoes and carved stone baptismal font. For travelers who use our world travel planner, St. Mary's holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We've traveled over 16,000 kms to be on the Orkney Isles and after taking the ferry over from John O'Groats it seems reasonable to see and absorb as much of the history and sheer beauty of the isles.....  more

  • Absolutely wonderful and very evocative. Beautiful location too. Very useful information on boards and a comprehensive guide is only £1 (available in Italian and German too). A must-see on any trip to Orkney. Note there are no refreshments or toilets on site.
  • A fascinating glimpse into history of this little Chapel built by Italian POW. Its absolutely stunningly beautiful inside! The roads to it are equally stunning driving over the causeway to get there. There's a wee gift shop with lots of little gifts to choose from and the lady there was lovely. There's disabled parking and access. Keep an eye on small children because the walls can't be touched due to being very fragile.
