One of the oldest cathedrals in the country and a great example of Spanish colonial architecture, San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral was founded in 1731, and today holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The church serves as the epicenter of Roman Catholicism in the city, and draws a large number of visitors and locals to its services and events. With symmetrical towers, high doorways, and stained-glass windows, the cathedral is reminiscent of grand European churches. The current Gothic-style appearance dates to renovations during the 1860s and 1870s. Don't miss the tomb of Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, who fell defending the Alamo. According to local legend, remains of more fallen Texans lie beneath the floors of the newer sections. Beautiful church that can be a quick stop or longer visit for mass, but definitely worth seeing. You can visit in conjunction with the Spanish Governor’s house on your way to the Market.

Beautiful church, undergoing some construction out front. The inside of the cathedral was amazing! We were in the day after the service for the fallen Pope. Very somber feeling. Amazing to see the pipe organ! Beautiful cathedral backdrop! Just amazing! Glad we walked to see it.

It is such a beautiful and peaceful church. You can tell they put a lot of money into it. It is air conditioned and you can take a few moments in your day to worship there. I also saw a place for daily confession. I gave the cathedral 4/5 stars for the cafeteria. The food is a little pricey given the quality of it.
